Host & Stay | Mandalay, Whitby

North York Moors. Sleeps up to 7

Summary:
Perched upon the West side of Whitby with uninterrupted views across to Whitby Abbey, Mandalay offers a flawless fusion of Hampton-styled luxury interiors and picturesque waterscapes. Originally built as a Sea Captain’s house in the late nineteenth century, Mandalay has been beautifully transformed into a charming four bedroom, four bathroom home with multiple entertaining spaces inside and out and allocated parking on-site for one car.

The Space:
Vibrant and bold in design, while it's all about the views at Mandalay, no detail has been overlooked when it comes to creating a space that is at once refreshing and inspirational. With ambient lighting, sinkable sofas and bedrooms designed for lazy lie-ins, this family retreat doesn't hesitate to make a statement. Clear blues and greens sit alongside a nature-inspired palette in this eclectic home.

Uplifting and energising, Mandalay is a waterside retreat designed for all seasons, bringing the outside in on balmy days while providing a wonderful retreat by the warm fireside for winter evenings. So whether you visit during a storm or on a postcard-worthy sunny day, holidays at Mandalay are breathtaking, no matter the weather.

Inside Mandalay, white-washed walls, blues, oranges and greens flawlessly blend with the kaleidoscopic horizon. At the same time, chinoiserie fittings, stunning artworks and salvaged features are a nod to this home's maritime past.

Sprawling over five floors, Mandalay offers four bedrooms, four bathrooms, both informal and formal reception rooms, a fully equipped kitchen and dining room, and terraces to both the front and rear of the house, ideal for taking in the sunshine across the day.

To enter Mandalay from Esk Terrace, our guests scale some 22 steps along the terraced garden before reaching the black Victorian front door. This welcoming space opens into a large, bright dining room with Victorian high ceilings, an enormous beaded chandelier and an oversized white shuttered bay window. Home to an eight-seater family-sized dining table overlooking riverside views, it is the perfect arena for leisurely evening meals and post-dinner celebrations.

The dining room leads through to the cleverly designed open-plan kitchen area where families can while away hours over buttery croissants dolloped with Whitby Deli jam, drinking fresh coffee from the cafetiere while seated on stools at the expansive snow quartz island. The bright, airy white kitchen features a large Rangemaster cooker with gas hob, under-counter fridge and freezer, dishwasher, and two wine fridges. Additional appliances include a white Smeg kettle, coffee maker and toaster, together with a microwave, handheld mixer and air fryer.

Towards the rear of Mandalay on the ground floor is a downstairs bathroom, including a sizeable wet shower room, ideal for washing sand from toes and rinsing out swimmers and clothing after your travels.

The ground floor also benefits from a small, tiled private courtyard with gated access to Cleveland Terrace. A wrought iron table, four-person chairs, and an outside water tap are inside the private courtyard. The courtyard is ideal for enjoying the late afternoon sun after a long day exploring Whitby town and surrounding beaches.

Returning to Mandalay, a staircase leads to the basement, which offers a vast sinkable coral velvet sofa seating five people with two additional chinoiserie armchairs, a 75-inch Smart TV, a gaming console, a record player and a massive collection of records. The bright and airy basement enjoys a single French door leading to the front terrace with two adjacent windows. Please note the Smart TV has multiple applications installed, but none are active, so guests must log into the apps using their personal accounts and log out upon leaving Mandalay at the end of their stay. In addition, the Smart TV does not have terrestrial TV installed.

To the rear of the basement is a fully equipped laundry room with a butler sink, washing and drying machines, with plenty of folding and drying space. Two additional small storage rooms include a further combined fridge, freezer and shelving hosting everything you need for the beach, including a wagon, beach blankets, boogie boards, snorkels, flippers, fold-out chairs and more.

The front terraced garden of Mandalay divides into two tiers. The upper terrace is fully paved and accessible from both the Basement French door and the graduated steps leading to the front door. The upper terrace offers views of the Esk River and features a white wrought iron table seating seven, a wall-mounted sun umbrella and is fully gated. Relax on the terrace as you sip cocktails and enjoy alfresco meals while watching silhouetted birds soar on thermals while Whitby shifts from day to night before your eyes.

The lower terrace provides views of the Esk River and Whitby Abbey, features a large green seating bench, and is fully gated. The bench offers an ideal place to curl up with a good book while enjoying the sunshine and the views. There is also a tiled area to place a disposable barbeque should you choose to barbeque on the lower terrace during your stay. Sometimes during the summer, the railway operates traditional black steam and diesel engines that are visible entering and leaving the station from both terraces.

Returning inside, and moving upstairs towards the first floor via the original Victorian staircase, is a family bathroom decorated in whites and pale greens with dual windows.

On the first floor are a twin bedroom and living room. The twin bedroom features matching Thibaut upholstered vintage beds, a sizeable double chest of drawers, a mirror, artwork, bamboo hanging wardrobes and a huge sash window facing the rear courtyard. To the front of the first floor is the living room with stunning views across River Esk to Whitby Abbey through an enormous white shuttered bay window. The living room is furnished with two navy three-seater sofas, bamboo pendant light, a coffee table, table lamps, antique tables and two custom antique faux bamboo armchairs upholstered in Schumacher fabric. The living room is a magical space to escape on an evening, regardless of the weather.

Upon reaching the second floor, there is a single bedroom and a master bedroom suite.

The single bedroom includes a mahogany antique four-poster bed with antique drawers, a faux bamboo chair upholstered in Schumacher fabric with matching blind and a bamboo hanging wardrobe. The single bedroom is light-filled through an enormous sash window, delightfully playful in bright pinks and greens, facing the rear courtyard.

The master bedroom offers views of the River Esk across to Whitby through a large sash window framed with white wooden shutters. The effect is profoundly relaxing, featuring a super king bed in blue linen upholstery, a wood-panelled wall, a matching white wardrobe, a dressing table, and chests of drawers. The room is only enhanced by designer lighting, a wall-mounted air conditioner for warmer nights, an original Victorian fireplace and a fully wall-panelled and tiled ensuite. The ensuite, decorated in whites and pale blues, includes a double shower, an art deco-style basin, and a backlit electric mirror.

Mandalay's third and top floor hides a wonderful fourth bedroom behind a discrete black door. Upon scaling the short staircase, you will discover a room with a distinctly exotic chinoiserie styling beneath low eaves. It features a super king bed (splitting into twin beds upon request) with a custom headboard by Schumacher, multiple skylight windows, Smart TV (operating on the same parameters as the basement Smart TV), artwork, and retro lighting.

Each bed inside the property benefits from premium bed linens and plush bedding to ensure you have a great night's sleep.

Host & Stay is committed to our owners that their homes are protected during bookings. For this reason, we require all of our guests to transfer a £250.00 Damage Deposit (subject to a £10.00 administration charge) or to purchase an Accidental Damage Waiver for £25.00, which will cover you for up to £500.00 of accidental damage during your stay.

Guest Access:
Guests have access to the entire property. Guests may collect Mandalay's keys via a secure key safe at the house, and full details will be provided by Home & Stay shortly before your arrival date, including the passcode.

Private and sign-posted parking for one small vehicle is available directly in front of Mandalay on Esk Terrace. The parking space measures 14.5ft in length and is parallel. When using this parking space, please do not overhang neighbours' parking spaces to the left or right of the parking space.

Fortunately, Mandalay enjoys two street entry and parking points. To the front on Esk Terrace, the house can be accessed via 22+ steps along the terraced garden to the front door, while to the rear, guests can enter from Cleveland Terrace via the ground-level courtyard. Guests often unpack while parked on Cleveland Terrace (as the street is in line with the ground floor), and should parking not be available on Cleveland Terrace (permits are not required), use the single guest parking space at the front of Mandalay on Esk Terrace.

Alternatively, ample parking is available in the vast parking lot beneath the railway station and only a two-minute walk from Esk Terrace (using the railway crossing).

Mandalay is in a residential area of Whitby with few commercial properties, so parties are not allowed. Please be considerate of our neighbours when staying at Mandalay.
