Nestled in a quiet side street in the pretty small town of Soham, Rands Retreat, one of a pair, has a fresh, airy interior and has been carefully decorated and furnished to ensure that you relax from the moment you enter. The owners have a keen interest in interior design and it really does show, making this the perfect choice for discerning guests looking for something extra special for their getaway. Close to both Newmarket and Ely and within easy reach of Cambridge, this is a great area to explore if you can tear yourself away from the peace and quiet of this lovely holiday cottage. Quaint Ely has a magnificent cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, and regular tours are offered. It is a great place to potter, explore the shops and stop for a bite to eat. Don’t miss out on the Stained Glass Museum, described by locals as ‘the gem in the fens’, and history fans can explore Oliver Cromwell’s House. The Lord Protector of England lived in Ely for 10 years and the house is the only surviving former Cromwell residence other than Hampton Court, and has been recreated to show how his family would have lived in the mid 17th century.
Newmarket offers horseracing, concerts and many events. Culture vultures should head to Cambridge, with its numerous museums and colleges. Many of the University of Cambridge’s eight museums are free to enter and offer trails and activity packs for children. There are also many independent galleries and exhibitions displaying pieces from local and international artists.
