Accessed by a bridleway, this remote, attractive workers cottage, dating back to 1710, is nestled between the bank of the tidal New Bedford River, open farmland and Oxlode Lakes fishing pits. The river marks the eastern edge of the RSPB Ouse Washes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a bird watchers paradise, noted for an array of rare wildfowl and birds, and the spectacular Whooper and Bewick’s swan migration between November and February each year, that sees upto 100,000 birds arrive in the area. There is also an abundance of wildlife to see almost daily from the cottage garden, including muntjac deer, hares, badgers, green parrots, barn owls and marsh harriers. With the ever changing landscape, this property is a great place to stay all year round. Fen Cottage boasts stunning far reaching views of nearby Ely cathedral, and as well as overlooking the RSPB reserve, is only 6 miles from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust’s, Welney Reserve. Its location on a bridleway offers superb dog walking and cycle routes. The cathedral city of Ely, university city of Cambridge, historic market town of Downham Market, and the market town of Newmarket, with its famous racecourse and connections to horse racing, are all within easy reach. With the Norfolk coast only an hour away too, you will never be stuck for something to do. Day/weekly tickets for fishing at the lakes next to the property are charged at around £6 per rod. The local village of Little Downham, 3 miles away, offers a shop, two pubs one of which is acclaimed for its Thai food, and a fish and chip shop. A great rural retreat. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.
