Porthmeor is RNLI lifeguard patrolled during the season, and a surf school operates in the summer with equipment hire available. Visit the Tate Modern Gallery, or relax and enjoy breakfast or afternoon tea at a selection of quality café’s overlooking the beach. St Ives continues to be one of Cornwall’s favourite holiday destinations, with a great variety of restaurants, café’s and pubs serving great food and local ales, plus every style of take away.
The area has attracted artists for centuries with its amazing light, micro-climate, clear blue waters and sandy beaches. The area is a wildlife haven and visitors can often sight dolphins, seals, basking sharks and rare bird life. Nearby Hayle Estuary and Marazion marshes attract bird watchers from around the world. There is a scenic coastal train running from St Erth into St Ives, and the picturesque coastal drive across the heather clad moorlands to west Cornwall’s Pendeen and Cape Cornwall/St Just Peninsula, passes the pretty village of Zennor, home of the famous mermaid legend. The popular ’Poldark’ TV series was filmed on location in this area.
For those happy to stay close to St Ives, there is much to see and do with excellent coastal paths for walkers, a great choice of local beaches including Harbour Beach and Porthgwidden, a truly magical sheltered cove with golden sand and an excellent beach café, all within walking distance of Boslowen. It is a short drive to Carbis Bay, where visitors will find calm clear blue sea and a wide sandy beach. If lazing on the beach is not your style, then you can always try a boat trip, fishing, coasteering, kayaking, surfing, horse riding, golf or stroll around the many individual shops within the town. St Ives proudly presents a wide variety of events and festivals throughout the year, including Feast Day in February, St Ives Festival of Music and Food in September, Christmas lights and festivities and the amazing New Year’s celebrations and fun-filled fancy dress street party.
