Castle is a completely unique and quite beautiful Cornish mansion house steeped in history. The house was built in the 1800’s out of local natural stone and granite in a classical style, with arched mullioned windows and balconies over looking the lawn. Legend has it that King Mark, when getting married to Irish Princess Iseult, sent his nephew Tristan to bring her from Ireland to Cornwall. During this journey the two fell in love and had a secret affair. Richard Wagner composed an opera on this story called ’Tristan and Iseult’, and this love story mentions them meeting in the old orchard in the grounds of Castle. The property has hosted some eminent people, including Count Fabrice (Chamberlain to the King of Saxony) and the Queen Mother, who stayed here during the World War II.

Set in a lush green secluded valley with colourful gardens of rhododendrons, azaleas, palms and camellias, Castle is located just 1 mile from the medieval town of Lostwithiel. The house has been used extensively for filming the television adaptation of Rosamunde Pilcher’s novels, who is best known for ’The Shellseekers.’ A major episode was filmed in the house and around the gardens. For nature lovers, there is a book by Edgar Thurston where he states that Castle has the largest coastal red wood sequoia in the whole country. There are also 17 rare species of trees, which are recorded in the book ’Champion Trees.’ An abundance of wildlife can sometimes be seen in the grounds, including rare red squirrels, wild deer, French and English pheasants, and a huge variety of British bird species.

These two apartments occupy the west wing of the owner’s beautiful home, and are both spacious and elegant, beautifully decorated using a careful blend of modern styling with period features, and sumptuously furnished with antique furniture and really comfortable sofas and beds. A very warm welcome awaits you here.
