Rooksbury Mill Nature Reserve is perfect for those who like fishing in a beautiful natural setting, and Blackwood Forest is ideal for walking and cycling. Highclere Castle, famous for the TV show ’Downton Abbey’, is nearby and stands amidst 1000 acres of spectacular parkland. Explore the gardens, woodland and views of the Kennet Valley. Spend a day at Jane Austen’s House Museum, where the novelist lived for her last 8 years with her sister and widowed mother in this modest 17th-century cottage, in the picturesque Meon Valley.
For the train enthusiast, take a nostalgic steam train journey on the Watercress Railway Mid-Hants line. Salisbury, Stonehenge, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Milestones Museum and the Hawk Conservancy Trust can all be reached within an hour. Nearby Southampton has ferry links to the Isle of Wight, which makes for a great day out. Slightly further afield, there are many historical nautical links in Portsmouth, with the famous ships of HMS Victory and The Mary Rose. Here, you can visit Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays for shopping, leisure and entertainment. The pretty sailing villages of Hamble-le-Rice and Warsash provide wonderful riverside walks and pubs overlooking the water. The New Forest National Park is easily accessible and has miles of scenic walks and bridle paths. You can often see ponies and cattle roaming the streets in one of the picturesque villages. For a family day out, visit Marwell Zoo, Peppa Pig World, National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the New Forest Wildlife Park, Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Manor Farm Country Park and Exbury Gardens. London is an hour away by train. Beach 25 miles. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
