Smarden was once a village thriving on the wool industry, and is now a sleepy backwater of old England, so classically Kentish that it is sometimes in film sets. In the heart of the village is a cluster of half-timbered houses with Kent peg tiled roofs. For day trips, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens are well worth a visit, as are the vineyards at Biddenden. Leeds Castle is easily accessible and it closely resembles a fairytale palace, rather than a fortress. The fine aviary and maze are also sure to keep children interested and amused. Golf can be found locally at Chart Hills. One of England’s world heritage cities, Canterbury has much to offer, with many shops, restaurants and theatres. A former church, now called The Canterbury Tales, has guided tours which lead through galleries and recount Chaucer’s tales. There is easy access to Ashford, from where the Eurotunnel can be taken over to Paris or Brussels. Beach 20 miles. Shop 3 miles, pub 2 miles and restaurant 10 miles.
