Stunning Mansion For A Luxurious Grand Holiday With A View, Skelmorlie

Ayrshire. Sleeps up to 26

Balvonie House is a grand country mansion in western Scotland with spectacular sea views, sleeping 26 in 11 spacious bedrooms. Ideally set up for entertaining with substantial living areas and eleven spacious bedrooms, it is the ultimate stunning retreat for all of the family. Relax in the sitting room or feast in the dining room (complete with mirror ball), before heading out to explore the sprawling grounds. With a snooker room, cinema room and open-air hot tub, there is something for everyone at this mansion.
Balvonie House was built in 1906 for a wealthy Glasgow family. The rooms are appropriately roomy with high ceilings and beautiful features. The house has been subject to a full, 10-year renovation to restore and enhance its unique features while bringing it into the 21st century. Each room has been uniquely designed by an interior designer to showcase the proportions and period features. Thankfully, modern heating & plumbing keeps the house just as toasty as you'd want it to be. There are also 2 wood-burning stoves to add to the ambiance.
Consider Balvonie your own while you're here. You will have access to the entire house to use as you wish. Explore the extensive wooded areas to discover the Halket Burn that runs through the grounds, complete with its own corner of preserved ancient wood. Bring your wellies!
You will be greeted in person to be shown around the house. The property manager lives unobtrusively onsite so any queries you have can be resolved right away.
Sitting high above the water where the River Clyde meets the sea, Balvonie House has spectacular views across to the Kyles of Bute.
The house is situated in the village of Skelmorlie. Skelmorlie is a beautiful, traditional Scottish coastal village of note built on a cliff above the River Clyde. In the past, wealthy Glasgow folk would come 'doon the water' to the west coast for their holidays. Many wealthy industrialists had their family holiday mansions here. Balvonie House is one of the last mansions to be built in Skelmorlie and one of the last remaining complete homes with its entire original grounds. Enjoy the wide open river views across the Kyles of Bute to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute and Toward Lighthouse.
Head to Wemyss Bay, just 15 mins walk away from Balvonie House for the heritage train station and traditional station cafe. From Wemyss Bay you can take a ferry across to Rothesay. The trip is spectacular and Rothesay is a quaint island town. Check out the famously restored Victorian loos! Mount Stewart is internationally famous (and the venue for Stella McCartney's wedding) and definitely worth a visit. Book ahead!
Take a trip to Largs for a walk along the Victorian promenade. Enjoy your gourmet fish and chips and the renowned Nardinis ice cream. Largs hosts a regular weekend market for a bit of retail fun as well as an annual Viking Festival.
The regular ferry to Cumbrae operates from Largs. Cumbrae is well-known for the option to cycle around the entire island in a short time with several bike hire shops available. Cumbrae & Largs host an annual Country and Western Festival which is great fun for all the family.
Balvonie House is within walking distance of the local Skelmorlie pub and shop. Wemyss Bay with its beautiful heritage train station and ferry terminal is just 1.2 miles or 15 minutes walk away. From there you can get to Glasgow by train and the Isle of Bute by car ferry. There is also a bus to Largs for a walk along the wonderful Victorian Promenade and an ice-cream from Nardinis. Taxis are available to and from Skelmorlie in any direction.
Please be aware that there is a stream in the garden and an old, very high treehouse which is now out of use. Children will require supervision at all times.
Balvonie is available to rent for a maximum of 139 days in any calendar year. The rest of the year, it functions as a holiday home for the owners family. Should the house be booked for 139 nights in any calendar year, we would close to new bookings. We have never had to do so.

Located in Skelmorlie, this villa is on a river. The area's natural beauty can be seen at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and Castle Semple Country Park, while Bute Museum and McLean Museum and Art Gallery are cultural highlights. Traveling with kids? Consider Funworld Leisure and Ardencraig Gardens. Be sure to check out the area's animals with activities such as game walks and birdwatching.
