The historic town of Barnard Castle is a short drive away, with its ancient cobbled market place lined with Georgian and Victorian architecture, as well as a host of antique shops, independent craft and gift stores, cafés, pubs, restaurants, a supermarket for all your essentials and a monthly farmers' market in Market Place, where you can pick up fresh produce, also available in many of the local shops, for a wonderful home-cooked meal. The town boasts a wealth of historic attractions, including its impressive castle ruins, an English Heritage Site that stands in an imposing position on a high rock, overlooking the River Tees. The Bowes Museum is a nationally renowned attraction, housed in an incredible 19th century French chateau-inspired building, surrounded by picturesque landscaped gardens. Walkers can enjoy exploring Teesdale and local beauty spots like Low Force and High Force waterfalls, as well as Egglestone Abbey and nearby Raby Castle, while the Deepdale Nature Reserve is great for wildlife lovers. Travel further afield to the North Pennines AONB and the Yorkshire Dales National Park to discover a plethora of fantastic walking and cycling opportunities, surrounded by peaceful countryside.
