Town: Hawkshead is a lovely village which preserves the beauty and character that attracted it to its most renowned inhabitants, William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. The profusion of little passageways, thoroughfares, archways, and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century buildings give this village that touch of charm which makes it so popular. The village has a number of charming inns, teashops, guest rooms, and gift shops, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which hosts a yearly rotating display of the famed author's paintings and tales.
