Bessemer House was built in 1901 to serve as the Head Office for the Bessemer Steel Company, founded by Sir Henry Bessemer who, in the 1850s discovered an inexpensive new way to mass-produce steel. Sir Henry moved to Sheffield in 1859 and established the first commercial Bessemer melting shop on the other side of Carlisle Street. The Bessemer process was probably one of the most important contributions to the Industrial Revolution. The Bessemer boom made Sheffield the kings of world steel.
