Bakewell retains a delightful rural atmosphere and offers a good selection of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as local farmers’ markets, an old 17th Century market hall and a leisure centre with a swimming pool, it is also situated within the Peak District and is ideally placed for exploring both the rugged Dark Peak and the softer limestone White Peak. Within driving distance is Alton Towers Theme Park, a handful of breathtaking stately homes including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, the impressive caverns in nearby Castleton and Little John’s burial place in Hathersage. A day trip to Matlock or Matlock Bath leaves you in the home of Pic Tor War Memorial from 1921, Heights of Abraham hilltop park accessed from the by either cable car or a steep zig-zag path, and Gulliver's Kingdom Theme Park, or go the opposite direction to Buxton which is also worthy of your time, as you can visit the impressive Edwardian Opera House, designed by Frank Matcham, or Solomon's Temple, a hilltop landmark dating from 1896 which offers views of the Peak District from the top of its tower.
