There are extensive private garden grounds surrounding the house ensuring peace and privacy.

The layout of the accommodation makes best use of the stunning views and the setting is perfect for taking in the scenery from the comfort of the sitting room and large sun lounge while enjoying the warmth of the wood stove, there is seating for 10 providing space for large family groups of all ages. In the summer months the large fully enclosed garden is all available for guest use as is the Barbecue hut, making it perfect for that special celebration. Along with the comfortable living space there is a full size table tennis table in the garage and for those enjoying outdoor pursuits, wet kit can be dried off in the Drying/boiler room to rear of garage.

The house nestles at the foot of Criffel one to the highest peaks in southern Scotland and there is direct access to paths leading to the summit and also the prominent Waterloo Monument that stands above the village of New Abbey. The picturesque village of New Abbey is only a short drive, as is the county town of Dumfries which provides good shopping and recreational facilities, although only a small village, it has excellent facilities including a hotel; a tea room and several historic sites including the famous Sweetheart Abbey; a historic Corn Mill which is open to visitors and the nearby Shambellie House runs frequent photographic exhibitions. The coast is just a short drive and easily accessible at Carsethorn with excellent beaches linking along the Solway Firth to Southerness, where there are good pubs for "refreshments" and food at both Carserthorn and Sotherness.

Outdoor pursuits are well catered for in the local area including within a short drive towards Dumfries is the Forestry Commission Mabie Forest Park with extensive walks and trails and one of the main stages on the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Network. Mabie Farm Park is on the edge of the forest and has indoor and outdoor facilities for all the family. Nearby, in the other direction along the coast road that follows the Solway Firth offering a plethora of beaches is the RSPB reserve at Mersehead and Southerness with its 18 hole championship links golf course. Continuing along the coast road you drive through a recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the popular seaside villages of Kippford and Rockcliffe with it's popular sandy beach. Alternatively, just relax in the lounge taking in the spectacular views from the house.

Located in Dumfries, this cottage is in the mountains. Shambellie House and John Paul Jones Museum are cultural highlights, and some of the area's landmarks include Sweetheart Abbey and Old Bridge House.
