Penbryn Cottage, Llandysul

Dyfed. Sleeps up to 2

Opposite a working farm, cosy Penbryn Cottage is set right on the all-Wales coast path, a brilliant spot for a break if you love exploring quiet coves, tramping over rocky cliffs, meandering along sandy beaches and simply taking in those mesmerising turquoise waters where you can often see bottlenose dolphins playing in the bay.

Escape from the bustle of everyday life and head for a holiday in the tiny hamlet of Penbryn, just up from the pretty beach of the same name. This dog-friendly Victorian farmhouse annex has bags of charm and a coastal theme to the interior decor that perfectly matches the laid back feel of this part of Wales. With a woodburner in the open plan living room and kitchen downstairs, upstairs you’ll find the bedroom and ensuite bathroom, making Penbryn perfect for couples. Outside, you’ll have a reserved spot in the car park for your car, a small patio with seating for a welcome spot of al-fresco dining in the Welsh sunshine.

From the cottage, head down the lane to the beach (dog friendly from October to March) or take the scenic route through the woods. This area is all about the coast though, so whether you’re walking, relaxing on a beach or looking for some adrenaline-fuelled water activities you’ll be spoilt for choice. For nearby sand-between-your-toes based beach encounters, try surfer’s favourite Llangrannog; sandy, sheltered Mwnt or the wide open Poppit Sands, popular for activity-lovers.

There’s plenty to explore along the coastline in both directions from the cottage, if you head south into the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to places like the pretty cathedral city of St Davids, coastal village of Solva, or Abereiddy with its Blue Lagoon (all about an hour away by car). Or adventure northwards towards the vibrant ancient market town of Aberystwyth, or a little further to the sand dunes of nearby Ynyslas (also a National Nature Reserve). Break up the journey by stopping halfway at the self-sufficient National Trust Llanerchaeron estate, with its Georgian villa, walled gardens, farm and lake.
