Bedford House Apartment: Sea-Facing Former Celebrity Home, Brighton

East Sussex. Sleeps up to 6

Located on Brighton's sea front, Bedford House Apartment provides the ideal base from which to explore the city's many attractions. Brighton Pier and the Royal Pavillion is a short 10 minute walk, city centre 15 minutes and train station 20 minutes.

Bedford House Apartment is a basement apartment accommodating the lower ground floor of Bedford House; a Grade 2 listed Regency house built around 1810. The house has an interesting and varied history having potentially been first built (as a detached house) for the Duke of Bedford. From the mid to late 1800s the house was a guest house for visiting gentry coming to Brighton to take the "sea air". 100 years later the house became the home of the impressionist artist Cecil D'Oyly John and subsequently the playwright Sir Terence Rattigan. Famous actors such as Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh have been frequent guests to the house.

The apartment has recently undergone extensive modernisation and refurbishment and now offers an Art Deco styled cinema room with a 75" TV, surround sound as well as a bar and dining area. The bar area offers all the facilities to enjoy a relaxing drink including a wine fridge, cocktail set and a wide range of glasses. With a double width LED lit staircase and electric curtains covering the TV this room provides a bit of theatre not to mention an ideal space for small groups of friends or family to gather to have fun celebrating a special occasion or reunion. Your own music can be played through the surround sound speakers using a bluetooth connection from your smartphone or tablet.

There are 3 Art Deco styled bedrooms. The main bedroom boasts a super king size bed with original 1920s dressing table. The two other bedrooms have 2 singles in each room, all with double sized quilts. The "Sueno" beds and tempur cloud support hypoallergenic pillows ensure a good night's sleep.

Two bathrooms with walk in showers and underfloor heating can be found at opposite ends of the apartment: one close to the bedrooms and the other next to the cinema room.

The kitchen has a 1950s look with aluminium "English Rose" units, formica work tops and Smeg retro appliances which include: an induction hob; oven; grill; fridge; freezer; dishwasher; kettle; toaster and microwave.

A Meile washing machine and tumble dryer, along with iron and ironing board can be found in one of the bedrooms.

The apartment has fibre optic wifi but please note that mobile phone signal strength may be weak unless close to a window.

A private entrance with keyless self check in/out means you do not need to have any interaction with other people outside your party if you are concerned about social distancing. Professional cleaners are used between bookings to do Covid 19 cleans.

Please note that 10 steps need to be descended to get to the front door and there are a further 12 steps down into the cinema room. The apartment may not therefore be suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues. Metered parking is available nearby and the apartment can be easily reached by bus and taxi from the train station. As the apartment is on the lower ground there are no direct sea views and no outdoor space.

For guests visiting on business both the Amex European HQ building and Brighton & Sussex County Hospital are located a short 10 minute walk. Both universities can be easily reached by bus and taxi.

IMPORTANT NOTE: FROM FRIDAY 25 AUGUST TO SUNDAY 17 OCTOBER THE PROPERTY WILL BE SCAFFOLDED TO CARRY OUT PAINTING AND ROOF REPAIRS. LIGHT INTO THE APARTMENT WILL BE RESTRICTED DURING THIS PERIOD.

This apartment is located in Seafront, a neighborhood in Brighton, and is near theme parks and on the beach. Volk’s Electric Railway and East Brighton Golf Club are worth checking out if an activity is on the agenda, while those in the mood for shopping can visit Brighton Lanes and Churchill Square Shopping Centre. SEA LIFE Brighton and Brighton Pier are also worth visiting. Windsurfing and motor boating offer great chances to get out on the surrounding water, or you can seek out an adventure with horse riding and cycling nearby.
