Ceol na Mara is Gaelic and translates to "Sound of the sea". It’s a perfect name because this cottage is only 200 yards from Nairn East Beach and the shores of the Moray Firth. Situated in the characterful Fishertown area of Nairn, Ceol na Mara is over 130 years old and tucked away on a very quiet lane. It’s the end of a terrace and has an enclosed garden across the lane. Being only two minute’s walk from a sandy beach, the cottage is ideally suited for a family holiday. Even though this is north Scotland, Nairn has a remarkable micro-climate, it’s often warm, sunny and experiences abnormally low rainfall per year.
There’s a thriving watersports scene in Nairn. Just round the corner from the cottage is a brilliant sailing club at the harbour and every day you wander the beach whilst staying at Ceol na Mara you will see paddle boards out on the water. There’s a resident pod of over 200 dolphins in the Moray Firth and they often come close into shore as well as round the Nairn river mouth near the harbour, where you can pick up a boat trip to spot them. There are two Championship golf courses at two different clubs in Nairn where you can book your tee time in advance during your stay at Ceol na Mara. Other courses worth trying in the vicinity are Castle Stuart Golf Links only 20 minutes away and Royal Dornoch just under an hour away in the car.
For those keen on hiking and biking, there are many quiet trails south of Nairn, as well as along the Moray Coast. Further south by 30 minutes in the car, you reach the Cairngorms National Park, a mecca for hikers, bikers and of course skiers. Fisherman are spoilt for choice. The River Nairn and River Findhorn are excellent rivers, and so too is the River Ness, but only 40 minutes away you have beats of the world-class Spey. Do your planning and secure your permits in advance. There are lochs easily accessible though if all you want is trout and not the king of fish, the salmon.
Back to the cottage and inside you’ll find a lovely holiday home, finished to an excellent standard. It’s a fantastic cottage in a brilliant place; coffee shops, bars and restaurants are all within a short walk and everything else already mentioned makes this an amazing place to visit for a holiday. Ceol na Mara can be your gateway to Nairn and the Moray Coast but also the mountains of the Cairngorms, Loch Ness and the wild of the Northern Highlands beyond.
