In the village of Ruswarp you can hire a boat to row along the River Esk, or simply take in the views whilst enjoying afternoon lunch at a waterside café. Watch out for the leaping salmon, as well as the cheeky resident seal that swims up from the sea to catch them, or if you are lucky you may spot the otters or kingfishers who live here.
The neighbouring coastal town of Whitby is just 3 miles away, and easy to access on foot, by car or even by steam train! The heritage railway route stops at the station in Ruswarp before making its way to Whitby, or you can ride the train out across the scenic rolling moorland all the way to Pickering, which is a fabulous day trip. Whitby is a town proud of its seafaring heritage, and you can also savour the freshly caught fish and seafood at award-winning harbour front restaurants. Or board a boat out of the harbour, for a day trip bouncing over the waves of the bracing North Sea.
Take in the fresh sea air with a walk down the pier, watch the sunset and see what entices so many visitors to return. There’s something about Whitby that fills your soul - the views, the atmosphere, the history and the heritage. The iconic abbey is ever watchful over the rooftops of the buildings clustered around the harbour below, stretches of golden beaches and the surrounding remote North York Moors. This is a destination for explorers, photographers and walkers.
Nearby are the coastal villages and towns of Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, Saltburn and Runswick Bay to discover, all unique and charming, as well as ancient woodland walks at Falling Foss or Dalby Forest.
