English Heritage's Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are within a few miles of Helmsley, which has a 12th-century castle of its own. The Cleveland Way begins in Helmsley, as well as the nearby North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages which are lovely to walk through at any time of year.
