The cottage features four generously sized bedrooms each with their own bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge and dining area. With quality restaurants, good local pubs, takeaways, cafes, a launderette, swimming pool, supermarkets and shops on your doorstep, Whitefriars Lodge is the perfect base to explore the Dales on foot, by cycle, car or train. Settle station is just a five minute walk away giving access to the historic Settle to Carlisle railway line. Settle is a great location for walkers, cyclists, climbers and cavers but is also a great base for visiting nearby attractions such as the beautiful village of Malham, historic Skipton with its medieval castle and bustling Kirkby Lonsdale. From the Lodge visitors can walk to the nearby Hoffman Kiln at Langcliffe, get a fantastic view over the Dales from Attermire or walk to Feizor or along the river to Knight Stainforth and enjoy a delicious coffee and cake at the local cafes. Intrepid walkers could use the Lodge as a base to tackle Yorkshire’s Three Peaks – the Lodge enjoys a view of Penyghent from the front door. Whitefriars is a historic property - a dwelling has occupied the site since the 1500s when it provided feeding, stabling and a loading area for the horse drawn carriages and carters of the day. In 1814 the property was rebuilt as the grand “White Hall” and the yards converted providing further stabling and a coach house. In the mid 1800s the house was served by four servants including a cook, two maids and a man to care for the horses and gardens. In its hey day as a great house the property and garden covered all of neighbouring Whitefriars Car Park and benefited from a grand winding entrance opposite the church. Guests can still see the historic greenhouse in the adjacent garden which grew produce for the “big house”. Photographs of the house during this period are displayed above the dining table so guests can imagine themselves living in the Lodge in the Downton era!
