The Peppercorn, Hexham

Northumberland. Sleeps up to 6

Set within the expansive Northumberland grounds of a boutique hotel, this self-catered holiday home brings all the privacy and convenience of a holiday let with access to the hotel spa, pool and restaurants.   Stunning converted stables provide this light and airy home with the original features of exposed brick and wooden beams combined with comfortable and stylish décor.

Through the light and airy open living space stands a striking spiral staircase leading to the first floor.  Benefiting from skylights and large windows the living room holds comfy sofas and a cosy log burner, whilst the well-equipped kitchen, complete with marble countertops, microwave, oven, and all you would need to cater leads to a large eight-seater dining table.  If cooking doesn’t appeal then the hotel can provide ready prepared meals to finish off in your oven and will even pack away your pre-ordered shopping for you before your stay.  Guests of the stables can take advantage of the dining options at the hotel, so why not treat yourself to a sumptuous afternoon tea or evening meal, made all the easier with babysitting options available to book.

The sleeping accommodation is made up of three bedrooms all with delightful en-suites, with either walk-in showers or bathtubs.  The ground floor holds a double bedroom with en-suite, and the first floor has a further two doubles with en-suites.  Crisp white linens, patterned wallpaper and lovely tiled, bathrooms await a night of sweet slumber surrounded by the calming bird song of the local countryside.

With sweeping views across the courtyard and contemporary artwork on the walls, The Peppercorn offers a calming aesthetic in keeping with the glorious natural surroundings. WiFi and Smart TV are included, making cuddling up on the sofa in front of the fire a tempting option for rainy days, whilst on a clearer day there is much to explore and discover in the surrounding area.

Right in the heart of the beautiful rolling hills and breath-taking scenery of Northumberland the Warwick Hall estate holds a boutique hotel complete with relaxing spa, swimming pool and restaurants offering evening meals and afternoon teas to enjoy as a sumptuous treat after a busy day trekking and exploring.  With Hadrian’s Wall and Chester’s Roman fort right on your doorstep, you are perfectly located to visit some of the best historic sites the UK has to offer.

In the heart of Northumberland, this striking estate is in easy reach of the bustling shops, museums, sporting arenas and eateries of Newcastle Upon Tyne, all just half an hour’s drive away, but the countryside location is a million miles from the bright lights, offering rugged natural beauty, historic landmarks and quaint market towns aplenty.

For those looking to indulge in the area’s rich history a trip to Chester’s Roman Fort offers the chance to explore an outpost set alongside the 83 miles of Hadrian’s Wall.  Dating back to AD 123, this Roman cavalry fort has beautifully preserved roman baths, steam room and officer’s quarters to discover, all set in the rugged beauty of Northumberland’s rolling hills.   Set yourself a challenge to walk or cycle the length of the wall or book a local guide to discover facts and information about the arduous process of building and maintaining the historic site.

Take a drive to the thriving market town of Hexham, and make sure you stop off at the historic Hexham Abbey.  Dating back to AD674, this historic structure houses hands on exhibits and experiences that will suit all ages.   Whilst in Hexham, don’t miss a visit to the Hexham Gaol, now a museum with a range of exhibits from archaeology to costumes.

A pretty walk to Hareshaw Linn (12 miles) will take you over six bridges and lead you to a striking 9m waterfall.  Set within a wildlife rich ancient woodland, this is a great place for a picnic and photo opportunity.  Look out for woodpeckers, red squirrels and bats!

Travel further afield for a day trip to the astounding Alnwick Castle.  Stroll amongst the courtyards and archways that featured dominantly in the first two Harry Potter films as the location for Hogwarts.   Right next to the castle are the beautiful Alnwick Gardens, a 12-acre landscaped garden with its grand tiered water feature, the Grand Cascade, exotic plant life and impressive wooden treehouse restaurant.

Keen golfers will be tempted for a round at Matfen Park, a Championship Northumberland course hosted by Warwick Hall’s sister estate.  Set in an idyllic landscape you can try a round or visit the driving range and Par-3 area.   If golfing isn’t your thing then contact the estate’s reception to arrange a hunting and shooting trip, accommodating all levels and tailored to the individual’s taste.  Or if you’d like to try your hand at River Fishing, then local expert, James Stokoe offers guided fishing days along the stunning warden stretches of the river.
