This is an all year round destination, with walking and horse riding over spectacular Moorland, with stunning views any time of year. There are a variety of organised events during the summer, in the surrounding areas and the Red Deer rut during the Autumn months can be a really exciting spectacle. Through October and November the Red Deer stags challenge each other for their hinds (females). If you hear roaring, known as Bolving, it is likely that there are deer nearby, alerting each other to a challenge. Ideally, you need a good pair of binoculars to view the deer and we strongly advise you to keep your distance at all times. Red Deer are not the only deer on Exmoor , there are also Roe Deer, Sika Deer and Munkjac. Exmoors diverse habitats encourage a vast array of species, including rare Bats and Butterflies, Buzzards, Sparrow Hawks, Dormice, Stoats and many many more. The National park have various programmes to assist with encouraging the wildlife with Special Areas of Conservation, sites of Special Scientific interest and Nature Reserves at Horner, Hawcombe and Tarr Steps Woods. There are a variety of walks on Winsford Hill, which is within 10 minutes of the property by car, or down the hill to Marsh Bridge, where you can park your car and walk along the River Barle into Dulvertonor in the other direction towards Tarr Steps where, after crossing the ancient Clapper Bridge, you you will find the 16th Century Tarr Farm Inn which is perfect for lunch, coffee or a cream tea. You can also walk the 3.5 miles to Tarr Steps from the cottage, by turning right as you leave Sheepfold. Stay local and visit Dulverton (2.5 miles) which has a range of local shops and pubs. A 40 minute drive will take you to Porlock Weir, where you can join the coastal path along part of the Somerset coastline, then on to North Devon and Cornwall beyond. The various beaches in North Devon offer wonderful walks or surfing and swimming, with vast stretches of golden sand at Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Woolacombe and these beaches are an hour or perhaps an hour and a half away, down the A361, if you decide to go to Westward Ho!.
