Chapel-en-le-Frith 3.3 miles. his delightful country mansion is on a ridge overlooking Chapel-en-le-Frith and set in 1.5 acres of gardens. Ridge Hall holds a prominent place of the history of the local area. The central core is a Norman fort which guarded the then forest and dates back to the 12th century. Tudor and Victorian wings were added down the ages. Many of the medieval features remain, including original fireplaces, windows and Tudor doors. No expense has been spared to create a stunningly beautiful residence very reminiscent of a five star stately country hotel. All thats missing is a Michelin star chef so make sure you take one along! As there are seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, its perfect for families or a group of couples wishing to spend a holiday in a peaceful and luxurious location but still within reach of lots of local attractions. Step into the impressive hall and you are immediately aware you are somewhere special. The sitting room is exquisite, with period furniture and a mighty stone fireplace surrounding the roaring woodburning stove. Across the way is a dining hall with table and benches and with the fire roaring and portraits adorning the walls every meal becomes a banquet. Its easy to imagine cooks and servants bustling in the kitchen and maybe the butler taking breakfast in the adjoining breakfast room. Theres a games room which includes a slate bed snooker table and a study where you can catch a movie, read in quiet contemplation, or even have a tinkle on the piano. With two sets of stairs and secret passages connecting the bedrooms and cellars (look for the trap door), you could take part in the worlds best ever game of hide and seek or act out a murder mystery. Every bedroom is steeped in history whether its one of the imposing four posters or the former nannys quarters. Like being at the top of a tower, theres a large beamed room perfect for a teenage dorm or a children's den. The master bedroom has a separate bedroom for the children and accommodates a full family unit. The grounds impress equally with stables, lawns and extensive woodlands, and bikes and other equipment can be locked in the stables. The Hall is a 10 minute walk to Chapel-en-le-Frith railway station, and even has its own sidings and a private road from the station to the Hall. Nevertheless Ridge Hall has a feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, in some of the most beautiful countryside in the Peak District. This Derbyshire cottage is also perfectly situated for walking and exploring the stunning surrounding countryside. The Hall is a 20 minute walk to the delightful village of Coombs, by Coombs Reservoir, where you can enjoy a variety of watersports. Take day trips to Blue John Caverns, Peveril Castle, the Spa town of Buxton (10 minutes by train), the historic towns of Bakewell and Ashbourne and an urban excursion to the thriving city of Manchester (46 minutes by train). An unforgettable holiday in the making.
