Summary:
Nestled along the River Esk, Esk View Cottage is a cosy 3-bedroom holiday home in the beautiful coastal town of Whitby. Perfect for family staycations, dog-friendly getaways or coastal retreats with friends – Esk View Cottage will provide the ideal base to explore the seaside town and the rest of North Yorkshire.
The Space:
Esk View Cottage is a homely and charming bolthole on the North Yorkshire coast. Located across three floors, this quirky property has an open plan living and dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, one bathroom and an enclosed patio area at the rear of the cottage.
The open plan living and dining area is the perfect place to relax with your loved ones. With a welcoming and cosy feel, you can relax on the sofa or sink into one of the armchairs after a long day of exploring Whitby. Switch on the TV to watch your favourite shows on Freeview or get stuck into a good book. Traditional in style, the cottage has a beautiful, statement fireplace and the purple feature wall ties in with the matching chairs. From the tall window, you can see views of the River Esk and the boats in the harbour.
The dining area includes a wooden table and dark green chairs. Nestled into the cove, it’s cosy feel makes it perfect for intimate dining with your party. Ideal for evening meals, you can open a bottle of wine and tuck into a home cooked meal.
Head up the steps to the traditional kitchen. Fully equipped for self-catering stays, it includes an oven, hob, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and cookware so you can serve up delicious meals during your staycation at the cottage.
Outside you’ll find an enclosed patio area. An added luxury in Whitby, this space includes a decked terrace area with outdoor furniture. Surrounding the patio is plenty of greenery and you’ll spot quirky fishing nets which pay homage to the seaside town. Blissful on spring mornings with a coffee and summer evenings with a glass of bubbly, this outdoor spot is a real treat.
Back inside the cottage and up the stairs to the first floor, you’ll find the first bedroom and the bathroom. Featuring a colour scheme of royal blue and white, the first bedroom has a traditional seaside cottage feel. The comfy double bed boasts plush bedding and linens. Matching industrial style wall lamps provide quirky alternatives to bedside lamps. A vintage dresser and chair complete the space.
The spacious bathroom has a bath with overhead shower, WC and basin.
Head up to the second floor and you’ll find a further two bedrooms. The first bedroom on this floor has a double bed underneath the sloped ceiling to create a really snug feel. With the same nautical vibe as the rest of the cottage, you’ll see boats on the cushions and cute anchor decorations.
The second bedroom has twin beds with matching maritime bedding. Ideal for children, this space is cute and welcoming. Look out of the huge window at the views of Whitby ahead and the river below.

Guest Access:
Guests have access to the full cottage. The keys to the property can be accessed via a secure key safe.
Like many of the properties along Church Street and other similar locations in Whitby, Esk View Cottage is situated high up, thus offering beautiful views over the River Esk and beyond. However, because of its elevated position, it can only be accessed from the main road (Church Street) via steps. These steps (24 in total) are narrow and steep and may be a problem for young families or people with mobility problems.
Alternatively, there is another access from Green Lane which is slightly longer but does involve less steps. Please note that both accesses are public thoroughfares and are not the private property of Esk View Cottage.
Please note that the gas fireplace cannot be used by guests.
Guests should also be aware that the garden is communal and shared with other properties nearby.
The Neighborhood:
Esk View Cottage is located on the East side of Whitby near the River Esk in the dock area.
Walk along Church Street and you’ll wind up at the East bank where you’ll find narrow medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
Walk over the swing bridge which sits over the River Esk and you’ll find yourself at the West side of town. It’s here you can discover cosy pubs, fun arcades and even more fish restaurants! Continue along the lively road until you reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.
Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park so it’s the perfect place for long walks.
Getting Around:
The centre of Whitby is a short ten-minute walk from Esk View Cottage.
Whitby train station is less than half a mile away so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.
