Hidden from view behind a high wall, this unique, detached, period holiday cottage was once part of Heytesbury House. The poet Siegfried Sassoon spent the latter part of his life at Heytesbury House, which he purchased in 1933, and his son George Sassoon grew up there and inherited the house. By 1939, there were sixteen new residents at Heytesbury, evacuees sent for safety at the beginning of the Second World War. In 1942, the evacuees left Heytesbury and were replaced by American troops in November. By the middle of 1944, there were twenty five American troops sleeping in the house and another thousand camped in the grounds. On the edge of the village, step through the gate and into the idyllic walled orchard garden in which the cottage is situated. The house is full of character and charm, with slate floors, beams, a fireplace with original lantern-style chimney, and the quirky criss-cross beams in the bedroom through which one accesses the second bedroom. The owners have renovated the property to add a third spacious double bedroom. The bathroom has a beautiful view of the garden. Heytesbury is a quiet village on the River Wylye and on the edge of Salisbury Plain. It is a beautiful walking area and within half an hour’s drive of Avebury, Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Stourhead and Westbury White Horse, and only a 10-minute drive from Longleat. The Wylye Valley is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Shop 500 yards, pub and restaurant 100 yards.
