Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, offers a great location to explore the western fells and lakes of the Lake District. Grasmoor, Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Whinlatter Forest are all within 12 miles. The path at Bassenthwaite Lake runs the length of the west shore, and there is an open air theatre at Mirehouse which is well worth a visit. The town has a great selection of independent shops, bars and restaurants. For something a little different, why not enjoy some outdoor adventures at Go Ape or explore the forest trails at Whinlatter (8 miles)? The Keswick Mountain Festival, which is usually held in May or June, offers three days of world class sports, outdoor activities, talks and films with live music (14 miles).
