Head south to Welshpool and spend the day at Powis Castle with its dramatic 300-year-old gardens, before heading into the centre to explore the streets lined with Georgian buildings and visit Powysland Museum, full of local artefacts and history. Oswestry sits north of Prestbury House with market days on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for an eclectic mix of crafts and goods, follow the Wilfred Owen trail to find out more about the poet's birthplace, or head to the family-friendly Cae Glas Park for a picnic. For a lively, picturesque town head to Shrewsbury to discover local and international attractions at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery inside a Victorian music hall and mansion, tour the empty cells of the 18th-century prison and head to the riverfront Quarry, a pretty park and garden with a play area and plenty of seating to watch the world go by. Alternatively, you can head 17 miles west to the stunning Lake Vyrnwy through the Old Market Town of Llanfyllin or 11 miles west to the beautiful Llanrheadr Waterfall where you can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea in the cafe at the foot of of the falls.
