It is set on two islands on the River Len in the heart of the county of Kent, renowned throughout the world as ’The Garden of England’, and has been fortified for over 900 years. Originally a Norman stronghold, the private property of 6 medieval queens and a palace used by Henry VIII. In the 1930s the castle was a playground for the the rich and famous as Lady Baillie, the last private owner entertained ’high society’ down from London for the weekends. The castle now offers visitors a glimpse of a rich past with a fine collection of art, porcelain and furniture. Within the 500-acre estate are four period holiday cottages, some furnished with antiques from the castle, and handmade drapes made by the castle seamstress. The sheets on the beds are fresh crisp Egyptian cotton and a welcome pack of toiletries is provided.
Access is given enabling entry to the castle and grounds as many times as you like during your stay.
Your ticket also provides access to the Knight’s Realm playground, where children can let off steam. Climb the Maiden’s Tower, joust along the aerial runway and explore the secret tunnels! Lose yourself in the spiralling yew maze and underworld grotto of shells and mythical beasts, plus a turf maze where toddlers and smaller children can play. Take in a free flying falconry display.
Take a picnic or stroll around the gardens which you can explore long after the daily guests to the castle and grounds have gone home. Additional activities that incur an extra cost include 9-hole golf, a hot air balloon flight (1st Apr-1st Nov), Go Ape! zip wire adventure, a Segway tour, a ride on Elsie the Castleland train or hop aboard the Black Swan Ferry Boat. Then visit the castle shop for a special gift to return home with.
