A contemporary property with sublime harbour views, Polruan Hideaway is both charming and supremely comfortable. With room for up to eight guests in four sumptuous bedrooms, this property provides a fine base from which to explore Cornwall.
Polruan lies just across the water from Fowey and you have a wonderful view of this pretty town from Polruan Hideaway. The property comes with an outdoor seating with a direct view across the water, and also a long lawn which runs down to the waterside, where a mooring is available should you want to hire a boat.
On the ground floor (actually the upper level of the property), a comfy living room has access to the terrace and offers a Smart TV and sofa seating. On the same floor you have a large dining table and chairs and your kitchen, with the whole area enjoying lots of natural light. All the appliances you could need, from a washing machine to a dishwasher can be found at Polruan Hideaway, with a double Neff oven and Lavazza coffee machine too. There’s also free Wi-Fi.
It’s on the lower ground floor that you will find the four bedrooms. The master comes with a king-size bed, built-in wardrobes and walk-in rainfall shower. The other bedrooms include a king-size, twin beds and bunk beds respectively, with a bathroom and separate shower room also found on this level. With calming, tasteful décor throughout, the property has been beautifully designed – no detail has been left to chance.
In Polruan you can view the village’s historic landmarks and catch the ferry to Fowey, where numerous tempting eateries can be found. Various events take place in Fowey during the year, including May’s Festival of Words and Music and August’s Fowey Royal Regatta, and the town is only a 15-minute drive from the Eden Project. On the Polruan side of the water, you can also visit the delightful beaches of Lansallos Beach and Lantic Bay.
Cornish fishing village Polruan is located on the top of a very steep hill and looks down over the waters of the River Fowey, Pont Creek and the English Channel. This pretty village’s sights of note include the 8th-century St Saviour’s Ruin, and the 14th-century Polruan Blockhouse, originally built to protect Polruan’s harbour from attack – originally, a second blockhouse was located across the water in Fowey too.
The better-known neighbour of Polruan has the area’s best restaurants and plenty of independent shops in its riverside town centre. You can get across there and explore it all easily, thanks to a ferry service which runs back and forth.
Fowey has plenty going on throughout the year, with August’s Fowey Regatta and the Fowey Festival of Art & Literature each May, while the beautiful Polkerris Beach is another highlight and has great places to eat nearby. You can also enjoy all sorts of water-sports in the area, such as kayaking, sailing and windsurfing.
You can drive to Porfell Wildlife Park in around 30 minutes, and in around 15 minutes to the Eden Project. Undoubtedly a local highlight, the Eden Project hosts all sorts of events including concerts from big stars of music. The east of the county also offers great days out at the Port Eliot Estate or the delightful Golitha Falls nature reserve, or you could try walking the Saint’s Way – this route crosses the county from Fowey to Padstow on the north coast.
Not too far away are the Lost Gardens of Heligan, around 30 minutes from Fowey, which make for a relaxing day amongst nature. Liskeard’s Adrenaline Quarry is certainly not relaxing but it is a lot of fun, with high-adrenaline adventures such as the zero-gravity giant swing to experience. If you’re bringing the whole family, you could make the trip to Helston to visit the Flambards Theme Park, or head towards Padstow for the Camel Creek Adventure Park, where all sorts of fun rides and play activities await you.
If you like gardens, you don’t need to stop after you’ve done the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. There are many more notable gardens around the county, with Trebah, Glendurgan and the gardens of Caerhays Castle among those worth investigating. In St Mawgan near Newquay, you can also experience the lovely Japanese Garden.
Go west and you’ll find many of the county’s best-known landmarks. As well as The Lizard and the iconic Land’s End, be sure to make time for Porthcurno’s open-air Minack Theatre – right by the sea, this working theatre is a spectacular sight in itself.
