Be it on foot or by 4x4 there is a mile long rutted and sometimes muddy track across the hills to navigate in order to reach Yr Allt. This traditional stone cottage is extremely remote and will be difficult to access in extreme weather conditions, so be prepared to walk if necessary (boots needed in muddy weather) but what a treat awaits those who make it. Combining phenomenal views and a gorgeous character interior, this cosy cottage is a dream getaway. Your only neighbours will be the mountain ponies, hill sheep and the Red Kite that frequently soar above. There are some great walks across the surrounding hills cared for by the National Trust and a good pub nearby with an open fire to greet you on your return home.

Discover unexplored countryside
Pull on your walking boots, grab a map, and a flask and head out onto the Begwns - a range of hills on the Radnorshire side of the River Wye cared for by the National Trust. The area is largely unexplored by the general public and there are no set footpaths but many tracks made by local farmers tending to the mountain ponies and sheep. An easy 1 mile stroll brings you to The Roast Ox, a popular village pub on the outskirts of Painscastle. This dog-friendly establishment is said to have been in existence for over 500 years and includes a spacious restaurant converted from an old Blacksmith's workshop.
Less than 4 miles from Hay-on-Wye
If all the solitude is getting to you, or perhaps you've simply run low on supplies head the 4 miles into Hay-on-Wye, 'The 'Town of Books' is fascinating, the shops there will not only provide for all your practical needs but also offer hours of browsing. There are boutique clothes shops, antique dealers, retailer's catering for crafts and interiors amongst many other things. There are some excellent pubs and restaurants and the most wonderful, old-fashioned sweetie shop!

"We had a wonderful holiday at Yr Allt. Fantastic location, immaculately clean. Perfect for a walking holiday. Loved the views, the red kites over the cottage and the hares in the lower field. Amazing walks locally and in the Brecon Beacons and Wye Valley. Can't wait to return." Jo & Chris
